Dear JHS Families:
We would like to provide an update to our communication this morning regarding the report of a weapon on a WMS/JHS bus. As noted, law enforcement responded quickly, and a search of the bus confirmed that there were no weapons present. In an abundance of caution, law enforcement conducted further investigation. As a result, law enforcement confirmed that a student brought a BB gun to the bus stop and concealed the BB gun at the bus stop rather than taking it on the bus. At no point was there any weapon on the bus nor was any threat made. The student and their parents have been notified and appropriate disciplinary action is being taken.
We understand and appreciate the high expectations that our community has for safety and communication. We continue to work closely with our outstanding law enforcement to meet those expectations and thank you for your support.

This morning a Wildwood Middle School student texted their parent stating that they had seen another student with a weapon on the bus. The parent immediately contacted the WMS administration. Law enforcement and transportation were notified, and the bus was diverted to another location and met by law enforcement. A thorough search verified that there were no weapons on board. The bus was released to resume its route and the students were safely delivered to school.
The communication, teamwork, and trust between parents, school administration, and law enforcement resulted in this situation being dealt with swiftly and professionally. We thank our parents, staff and partners in law enforcement for working together to keep kids safe.

Dear Jefferson High families,
Please remember that school is closed on Thursday, 11/11, in honor of Veterans Day, and the half-day on Friday, 11/12, is a remote learning day. Our child nutrition services will continue Friday, with food packs available for pickup from 11:45am-12:45pm.

Oct. 28, 2021: The threatening social media post reported last night was found NOT credible following an investigation by our partners in law enforcement. Although investigators determined it was a copy of a threat circulated in neighboring school systems, the threat raised concern among our students, staff, and families. We are deeply grateful for the swift response of law enforcement to this and any threat to the safety of our school communities. Additional law enforcement officers will be at Jefferson High School this morning to help answer questions and reassure students and families. We appreciate everyone's trust and support as we maintain the safety of students and staff.

Oct. 27, 2021: Jefferson County Schools has been alerted that a threatening social media post is being shared among students at Jefferson High School. The image being shared in the post is an exact replica of a social media threat that has circulated in neighboring school systems. Still, in an abundance of caution, our county partners in law enforcement are conducting an investigation. At this time, we have no evidence to substantiate a threat. We will update families with any additional findings. Thank you for helping us maintain the safety of students and staff with your vigilance and support.

Staffing shortages are impacting school systems across the country. For Jefferson County Schools (JCS), the shortages have significantly affected our staff time to complete critical behind-the-scenes work that goes into sustaining excellence in teaching and learning. Beginning October 15th, Jefferson County Schools will dismiss students 1/2 day every Friday. Staff will spend 3 hours completing all non-student supervision work (planning, SAT/IEP meetings, creating instructional materials, deep cleaning, etc). A full explanation of the factors leading to this change and expectations for staff in using this time can be found in the “Sustaining Excellence Plan” on the JCS website https://5il.co/101uz
