📢 BIG NEWS for Washington High School! 🦅

Hi everyone! I’m the new Esports Coach at WHS, and I am incredibly excited to launch this program. Esports isn't just about gaming—it’s a way for our students to build teamwork, learn strategy, and compete for college scholarships!

To get our players off the sidelines and into the game, we are looking for community partners and individuals to help us build our "arena."

We are currently seeking donations of:

🎮 Consoles: Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switches

🖥️ Hardware: Gaming monitors (high refresh rate preferred)

⌨️ Gear: Mechanical keyboards, gaming mice, and headsets

💼 Sponsorships: Local businesses looking to support a new kind of varsity sport!

Whether you are a business or a person with extra gear, your support makes a huge difference for these kids.

Let’s show them what Jefferson County can do!

Students, please remember NOT to store your Chromebook in your car—even for a short time. Cars can heat up or get extremely cold very quickly, and those temperature changes can permanently damage your device, including the battery, screen, and internal components. A damaged Chromebook may stop working and could result in fees for repair or replacement, up to $450! Please bring your Chromebook inside with you each day and store it in a safe place. Thank you for taking care of your device!

Jefferson County Schools will be on Fall Break next week. We hope you have an enjoyable and safe break! School resumes on Monday, December 1st. We will see you in school on Dec. 1!

The week before Fall Break is a great time to check-in on attendance and academic goals. Are you meeting the Strive for Less Than Five Absences Challenge? Do you have any missing assignments to turn in? Are you attending school all day, every school day that you can? Check-in on your goals and congratulate yourself for the progress you’ve made and readjust as needed to continue to meet your goals for the first semester.

Jefferson County Schools focuses on helping students not become chronically absent. Chronically absent students are students that have missed 10% or more of school days, no matter the reason for the absence. Students can be chronically absent even if their absences are excused by a parent or physician note. Be in school all day, every day you can, to avoid becoming chronically absent.

The fall season is here, and Fall Break is on the way, but don’t let your grades “FALL” during the month of November. Make sure you are attending all day every school day in order to stay on top of your school work. Attending school every day can help you achieve high academically.

Jefferson County Schools encourages all students and families to ensure that they are not chronically absent. Being chronically absent is missing 10% or more of school days for any reason, unexcused and excused. As of Nov. 4th of this school year, students are chronically absent if they have missed more than 5 days of school. Strive to be in school all day, every school day during November.

The month of November has many days off from school for breaks including Veterans’ Day to honor our Veterans and for Fall Break. During the month of November, it is important to be in school all day, every day when school is in session. Students should strive to not miss any school days during November.

If a student misses school for any reason, the student must submit an absence note to the school upon returning to school to explain the absence. An absence is considered unexcused until the note is submitted. Parents and Guardians may submit an absence note online by visiting the JCS or their school’s website and clicking on “Submit an Absence.” Families may also submit a paper absence note to the school.

Fees for EACH AP exam will be $99.

ONLY checks or money orders can be accepted.
Please make these out to Washington High and place the student's name in the Memo section.

During this time of economic concerns, if you feel you may need assistance with the cost of any additional exam (after the first exam) please ask your student to check the Google Form to discuss this with our AP team.  We have some assistance available to help with student needs.

Fees will be accepted on the above dates outside of Ms. Junkins' Room (A210).

The Jefferson County Board of Education has offered to reimburse half of the cost of each exam taken (when a student scores a 3 or higher) once scores are released in July, 2026.  Further information will be shared at a later date.

If you have further questions, please email Ms. Cathy Junkins at cjunkins@k12.wv.us

How are you doing with the Strive for Less Than Five Absences a Semester Challenge? Remember to keep your Attendance Tracker updated so that you know how many days of school you have missed.

If you are not feeling well, it is important to know how sick is too sick to come to school. The information linked HERE on the JCS website is great information to guide students and families when making the decision to come to school or to stay home when a student is not feeling well.
