Dear Rumsey Students and Parents: Please see the information below which clarifies the status of Rumsey students on early dismissal days as well as on remote learning days for Jefferson County: On early dismissal days (Faculty Senate days and Fridays 10/15-Thanksgiving), there will not be a PM Rumsey route. The all day Rumsey students will return with the AM students on those days. PM and all day students who have their own transportation will be permitted to drive themselves to Rumsey or have a parent transport them. On Remote learning days, including the drill on October 22, no JCS transportation will be provided for Rumsey students. Again, students with their own transportation will be permitted to drive themselves to Rumsey or have a parent transport them. As Rumsey serves three counties, their instruction will continue for students. From the beginning of the year, all assignments and assessments have been placed in Schoology and other relevant electronic resources. JCS students will have access to that work and will need to make sure they they log in to the Faculty Senate and remote learning days they are not physically present at Rumsey so that they are not marked absent. If you have any questions, please reach out to me. Sincerely, Judy Ann Marcus

Last week, members of the Washington FFA Chapter participated in two of their year-long community service projects. On Monday, members prepared a community meal at Asbury Methodist Church. Members purchased the ingredients for the meal at a local grocery store after school, prepared the food in a kitchen and served over sixty meals. On Saturday, in partnership with members from the Washington High School National Honor Society, students picked up trash along Huyett Road as part of the Adopt-A-Highway Project.

Staffing shortages are impacting school systems across the country. For Jefferson County Schools (JCS), the shortages have significantly affected our staff time to complete critical behind-the-scenes work that goes into sustaining excellence in teaching and learning. Beginning October 15th, Jefferson County Schools will dismiss students 1/2 day every Friday. Staff will spend 3 hours completing all non-student supervision work (planning, SAT/IEP meetings, creating instructional materials, deep cleaning, etc). A full explanation of the factors leading to this change and expectations for staff in using this time can be found in the “Sustaining Excellence Plan” on the JCS website https://5il.co/101uz

Good morning, Unfortunately, we are having trouble with our air conditioning unit in B Hall. At 6am our custodian found this problem and Southern Air was notified as well our county maintenance department. After three vacant teaching jobs were filled, work began to move the classes from upstairs B to other parts of the building including the auditorium, media center, and computer labs. Our hope is that this problem will be fixed by this afternoon. If it is not, we will work on placing the classes from downstairs B into other sections of the building. If the problem continues into tomorrow, classes will continue to meet in other cooler locations.

Good afternoon, Today, our fire alarm was pulled again during one of the lunch shifts. We do not have a fire or any other type of emergency today at Washington High School. However, this behavior is creating serious disruptions to the school day. We are viewing cameras and will be interviewing students. If your student has information related to this behavior, please encourage him or her to seek our Officer DeSarno. In addition to school consequences, we do plan to seek any criminal charges available for us to file. I appreciate your support and trust.

Dear Parents and Community Members, Today, September 30, at approximately 1:50pm, the fire alarm went off at WHS. The students did evacuate the building with staff members when the alarm sounded. The building was inspected and there was no fire. The alarm company was notified not to contact the fire company. Students and staff returned to the building at 2:05pm. If it is determined that a student pulled the alarm, there will be appropriate disciplinary action. Thank you as always for your support.

Senior Financial Aid Night
Today, during second lunch at approximately 12 noon, our fire alarm went off at Washington High School. The alarm was triggered by smoke coming from a rooftop unit over F hall. The fire company did arrive on site and assessed the situation before students and staff were able to safely reenter the building. Despite the interruption, all students did have the opportunity to eat lunch. For more details, read the letter posted below from our principal Judy Ann Marcus.
